Description

Skipped ahead to an image set I'm very excited about: the North America Nebula!

I'm excited about it because I have finally completely put together and tested a portable rig I've been working on for a while: the Rokinon 135mm f/2 lens, one-shot color cooled astro camera (the ZWO ASI294MC Pro in this case), and a filter drawer for swapping in either a light pollution filter or the IDAS NBZ filter (a duo-narrowband filter for fast optical systems) , all atop my Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer star tracker. I will eventually be adding a guide camera (I've tested it before and had some success) as well as an ASIair mini-computer that was passed along to me.

The North America Nebula is a large emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, which flies high in the summer sky of the northern hemisphere. The bright star there is Deneb, part of the easily-identifiable Summer Triangle of stars. The main part of the nebula bears resemblance to part of North America; you can see it if you imagine that the dark region is the Great Lakes extending down into the US. It covers an area on the sky the size of ten full moons from our perspective, but is too dim to see without optical aid under dark skies. One very hot star, hidden behind the dark cloud "off the Florida coast," is responsible for energizing the entire 140x90 lightyear nebula and causing it to glow.
